About the Chipman Inn

Our History

Built in 1828, the Chipman Inn is a historic Federalist-style home that is deeply connected to the story of Vermont. Originally constructed as a private residence for the family of Daniel Chipman, a Charter Trustee of Middlebury College, lawyer, and U.S. Representative from Vermont, the Chipman has been a place of gathering, conversation, and connection for nearly two centuries.

In the 1970s, the house was transformed into an inn, beginning a new chapter in its long history. Today, we continue that tradition by welcoming guests into a space that blends historic character, modern comfort, and the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape.

The Chipman Inn is much more than just a place to stay. It is a creative haven for artists, musicians, writers, and travelers looking for a place to explore, reflect, and create. We hope that the inn provides the space and atmosphere for ideas to grow and memories to be made. We are honored to continue the story of the Chipman Inn — a place where history, creativity, nature, and community come together. We invite you to experience our special corner of Vermont and make the inn part of your own story.

More Than a Stay

The Chipman Inn is the living expression of the values that inspire the Snug Foundation. While the foundation works to spread kindness through art, music, sustainable fashion, and community, the inn offers a place where those values can be experienced in everyday moments.

We believe hospitality is about more than providing a beautiful place to stay. It's about creating an environment where people feel genuinely welcomed, cared for, and connected. Every detail, from the textures and scents of the inn to the meals we share and the conversations that unfold around the fire, is designed to engage the senses and invite presence.

The Chipman Inn is a creative haven where artists, musicians, writers, and curious travelers come to slow down, reconnect, and find inspiration. Here, history, nature, creativity, and community come together to create something that can't be manufactured: a feeling of belonging.

Whether you're joining us for a weekend retreat, a family gathering, a creative residency, or simply a quiet escape in Vermont, our hope is that you leave feeling more connected—to yourself, to others, and to the world around you.

At its heart, the Chipman Inn is an invitation to experience kindness as something tangible. Not just something you receive, but something you carry with you long after your stay.

  • Had a marvelous time staying at the Chipman Inn over the weekend. Immaculate room, terrific hospitality, gorgeous view out the windows, yummy breakfast and perfect coffee. Thank you for a wonderful stay! Will be staying again.

  • We stayed here while celebrating our 50th anniversary by visiting Middlebury College where we met. We love the quiet location in the beautiful Middlebury Gap, and the 1828 house is very special with its huge hearth with Robert Frost's snowshoes over the mantel. Our roomy comfortable 4-poster bed was handsome and the room and private bath were very clean. The owner was kind enough to purchase flowers, balloons, wine, and local chocolates on behalf of our kids to welcome us. And next morning we had a delicious breakfast of berries, excellent granola and yogurt. Eggs, banana pancakes and bacon.

  • Colleen was an amazing host. She went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. Cannot recommend Chipman Inn enough!

  • Our group of 13 friends had the inn to ourselves and had a wonderful relaxing time! Colleen is a gracious host providing a delicious breakfast each morning at our requested time. She inquired about dietary restrictions in advance and accommodated those seamlessly. Beds were very comfortable. Nordic and alpine skiing, hiking and the beautiful town of Middlebury are all right there. We highly recommend a stay at the Chipman Inn!
